15 emergency room visits per year for “suicide attempts” in Saint Martin

Public Health France (SPF) has published its bulletin on the “annual surveillance of suicidal behavior” for 2023 in Guadeloupe, Saint-Martin, and Saint-Barth.
In 2023, the number of emergency room visits for suicidal behavior in Saint-Martin was 15, and the same number in Saint-Barth. “The evolution in these territories is difficult to determine given the low numbers and fluctuations,” says SPF. In Guadeloupe, it increased by 3.4% compared to 2022, reaching 241.
The number of hospitalizations for self-inflicted acts (including suicide attempts and self-mutilation) is 23 in Saint-Martin and 15 in Saint-Barth in 2023. The standardized rate cannot be calculated for these two territories given the numbers. In Guadeloupe, 94 hospitalizations for self-inflicted acts were counted in Guadeloupe, representing a standardized rate of 26 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants (-16.9% compared to 2022).

In 2021, nearly 40 suicide deaths were recorded in Guadeloupe, corresponding to a standardized rate of 12 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (+4.8% compared to 2020), adds Public Health France. For Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, the numbers are low and cannot be communicated in order to maintain statistical confidentiality.
Finally, the number of deaths by suicide in Guadeloupe increased by +8.3% between 2020 and 2021 with nearly 40 deaths, while it was stable in France with nearly 8,900 deaths (-0.3%).
This number corresponds to a standardized rate of 11.6 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (+4.8% compared to 2020), lower than that of the whole of France (mainland + overseas departments) equal to 13.3 per 100,000 inhabitants (-0.9% compared to 2020).
