6 St Maarten Point Blanche Prisoner’s Headed To Bonaire

Six prisoners on Sint Maarten will be transferred to the prison on Bonaire. It concerns 4 male and 2 female prisoners. This was announced to parliament by the Minister of Justice of St. Maarten, Nathalie Tackling. The decision to send prisoners to Bonaire follows the riots of May 14 at the Point Blanche prison on St. Maarten, during which parts of the prison were vandalized. This damage has exacerbated the already existing problems with safety and capacity.

The Minister also reported that three inmates suffered minor burns as a result of a fire that started inside the prison. Prison medical staff treated them, although one of the inmates refused medical attention from the prison nurse. This inmate was then transferred to the emergency room of the St. Maarten Medical Center, where he received medical treatment.
