Police to Dispose of Impounded Scooters Due to Non-Compliance
The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) will begin disposing of several impounded scooters after owners failed to retrieve their vehicles. These scooters were confiscated in recent months due to technical issues and the absence of required legal documentation for operation.
Despite multiple notifications to the owners, the majority have not responded. In consultation with the Prosecutor’s Office, KPSM will now proceed with the destruction of the unclaimed vehicles.
These impounded scooters were seized as part of traffic enforcement actions aimed at improving road safety.
During controls many of scooters/ motorcycles were found to be mechanically unsound, making them unsafe for use on the public road. Riders were also often unable to produce necessary legal documents, such as licenses and vehicle registrations, required for lawful operation on the island’s roads.
These violations present significant safety risks to both the riders and the broader public, prompting their removal from circulation.
Following the impoundments, KPSM made multiple attempts to contact the scooter owners, urging them to retrieve their vehicles by providing the required documentation and resolving. Despite these efforts, few have responded, and the unclaimed scooters have accumulated at the police impound facility.
