On Thursday afternoon, May 29th, the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard conducted a routine patrol in the Simpson Bay area. During the operation, officers identified a vessel transporting goods without proper documentation. The vessel, registered in Sint Maarten, was promptly escorted to the Coast Guard station for a thorough inspection.

Upon searching the vessel, officers discovered that the captain lacked the required documents for both the vessel and its cargo. They found a large quantity of conch on board. The captain failed to present permits authorizing the transport of the conch from Barbuda to Sint Maarten. He claimed that a specific vendor had purchased the goods and that he was only responsible for delivering them. Authorities seized a total of 421 kilograms of conch.

Moreover, the inspection revealed 117 dead lobsters. Of these, 71 were either undersized, carrying eggs, or molting—conditions that clearly violate regional fishing regulations.

Due to these violations, the captain now faces legal action for possessing undersized lobsters and for transporting conch without proper documentation.

Additionally, the vendor involved in the transaction will also face legal consequences for participating in the illegal trade and transportation of conch.

Authorities emphasized the importance of compliance with maritime and environmental laws.

They urged vessel operators to verify all permits before engaging in transport, especially when handling protected marine species.
