The meeting followed Minister Tackling’s active involvement during the 1531st Human Rights Meeting of the Committee of Ministers (10–12 June), where the Committee examined the Corallo v. the Netherlands case.

The Minister’s direct presence at the session signaled Sint Maarten’s clear commitment to ongoing reforms.

In particular, the Committee welcomed both her participation and the authorities’ dedication to overhauling the island’s detention system.

They acknowledged meaningful steps taken to improve prison conditions and enhance compliance with human rights standards.

Moreover, this bilateral meeting provided an important opportunity to discuss the Murray v. the Netherlands case in anticipation of its second examination by the Committee of Ministers in December 2025.
That case addresses the lack of meaningful review for a life sentence imposed on an individual with a diagnosed mental illness, who served time in correctional facilities in Curaçao and Aruba.

The open and forward-looking discussion reinforced mutual cooperation and highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue between Sint Maarten and international human rights bodies.
