Strict Security Marks Start of Nuto Wawoe Trial
The long-awaited criminal trial against Urvin “Nuto” Wawoe began today under intense security measures. Authorities view the case as one of Curaçao’s most serious in recent history.
Trial Begins at Naval Barracks
The court chose an unusual location: the naval barracks at Suffisant. It replaced the usual courthouse at Nieuwe Haven due to security concerns and the high-profile nature of the case.

Police arrested him in Santo Domingo several years ago. He was extradited to the Netherlands and held in a high-security prison in Vught.

Today’s trial marks the beginning of the “Themis” case, named for the Greek goddess of justice. After multiple preliminary hearings and remote sessions, the full criminal trial is now underway.
Extreme Security Measures
Due to the size and danger of the case, security is tight. Only ten press seats are available. Journalists had to register in advance.

Visitors cannot bring their own vehicles. Instead, they must park off-site and take a shuttle to the barracks. Once inside, no one may leave until the session ends.

Security checks are strict. The court demands all attendees arrive early. Officials have blocked off two weeks for the proceedings—from June 23 to July 4—signaling the complexity of the trial.
Fourteen Serious Charges
The Public Prosecution Service filed fourteen major charges against Wawoe. These include membership in a criminal organization, ordering killings, and involvement in several murders and attempted murders.
Wawoe allegedly ordered the killing of Erwin “Juni Jais” Juliana. He also reportedly played a role in the murder of Shanyley Arnhem. Prosecutors say he helped organize a 2014 shooting that injured seven people.
Crimes Across Islands
Authorities accuse Wawoe of directing crimes in both Curaçao and Sint Maarten. Victims reportedly include Kevin Metura, Omar Jones, and Adrian Browne-Thewet.

The case also includes charges related to drug trafficking. Prosecutors believe Wawoe managed several large-scale drug shipments.
International Drug Operations
According to the indictment, Wawoe helped import 30 kilos of cocaine and marijuana into France. He also allegedly exported over 140 kilos of drugs from Curaçao to Jamaica and Sint Maarten.

Historic Case for Curaçao
The court views the “Themis” case as one of the most significant in Curaçao’s legal history. With heavy security, severe charges, and international links, the trial is set to dominate headlines in the coming weeks.
