New Video Point Blanche St Maarten Warehouse Robbery
Spike in Robberies Alarms St. Maarten Residents in 2025
St. Maarten is facing a troubling rise in robberies in 2025. Residents, business owners, and tourists alike are growing more concerned.
So far this year, the island has recorded over 150 robbery incidents. This marks a 40% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Police Commissioner Richard Wilson confirmed the surge. “We are seeing more armed robberies, especially targeting small businesses and pedestrians,” he stated.

Most incidents occur at night. However, some have taken place in broad daylight. Convenience stores, jewelry shops, and roadside vendors are the most common targets.
As a result, many store owners have begun closing earlier. Others have hired private security. “It’s the only way to protect ourselves,” said a shopkeeper in Philipsburg.
Meanwhile, police have increased patrols in high-risk zones. They’ve also launched Operation Safe Streets, a multi-agency initiative. The goal is simple—reduce crime and restore public confidence.
Despite this, critics argue the response is too slow. “We need quicker arrests and tougher laws,” said community leader Annette James. She believes the justice system must do more to deter repeat offenders.

At the same time, social media videos of robberies have gone viral. These clips fuel fear and frustration. They also help identify suspects, according to authorities.
So far, 35 arrests have been made. Many involve minors or repeat offenders. Therefore, the government is reviewing juvenile justice policies and surveillance laws.

In addition, Parliament plans to debate new crime-prevention strategies this month. These may include curfews, surveillance expansion, and more funding for police.
Tourism officials are also concerned. Crime could hurt the island’s reputation. “We must act fast to protect both visitors and residents,” said a representative of the Tourism Bureau.

Although crime is rising, many residents remain hopeful. “This island is strong,” said a retired teacher. “We’ve faced worse and come through.”
Still, for now, safety remains a top priority in St. Maarten.
