Twelve months prison six suspended, for sexually assaulting young woman in the street

The Saint-Martin local court judged a sexual assault case last Thursday. The facts date back to June 1 in Saint-Martin. It was 4:30 in the morning in Marigot when EW, a young woman in her twenties, was walking to work. It was at that moment that JF, a 41-year-old from Saint-Martin, grabbed her behind twice before following her for a few meters. A colleague of the woman and the video surveillance recorded the assault.This is not the first time that EW has crossed paths with this man, since the latter had already filed a complaint against him. He had notably already come to her workplace, identifiable thanks to the logo on the young woman’s t-shirt. Heard by the police, the Saint-Martinois under the influence of substances, admits the facts, indicating that he had a sexual urge. The profile of the attacker is as follows: JF, unemployed, lives with his grandmother. He is recognized as a disabled adult. On June 6, a psychiatrist diagnosed him with sociopathy, describing him as “non-dangerous, when he is not intoxicated. The man is said to know the rules of living together, but does not apply them.” The professional also notes sexual urges in him. He is not unknown to the justice system and has already been convicted for, among other things, violence with weapons, theft and drug use. During his trial, the man seemed to be in a trance and began to deny the facts. These remarks caused Xavier Sicot, the public prosecutor, to react. “I saw her walking, she was hot, I couldn’t contain myself. When I see women in the street, I want to sleep with them,” the prosecutor reported. “You said it in your signed statement. His profile is very worrying. His words are chilling. He considers women as objects, if nothing is done, he will go and attack someone else,” he said.For these facts, the prosecutor is requesting twelve months in prison, eight of which are suspended with probation. The man will also have to look for work and undergo treatment for his addictive behavior (alcohol, drugs and sex). A three-year ban on contact with the young woman and registration in the criminal register of perpetrators of sexual offenses are also requested. “He is a danger to women. I completely believe the victim and I understand the harm she has suffered,” says the prosecutor. EW, who has since lost his job, is joining the civil action and is seeking 2,000 euros in compensation. After deliberation, the court found JF guilty of the assault he was accused of. In repression, he was sentenced to twelve months in prison, six of which were suspended on probation for two years, with the obligation to undergo treatment. The man was also prohibited from entering into contact with the victim and his name would be entered in the judicial register of perpetrators of sexual offences.
