Video St Maarten Latest Breaking News Saturday November 9th 2024
Robbery crimes in St. Maarten have sharply increased, alarming both residents and law enforcement. Over the past few months, police have reported a noticeable rise in armed robberies targeting businesses, homes, and tourists. This surge has put the community on edge and strained local police resources.
Law enforcement has responded by increasing patrols in high-risk areas. Officers are now more visible in commercial districts and tourist zones. They also advise businesses to install security cameras and keep emergency numbers readily accessible. Despite these efforts, robberies continue to occur at an unsettling rate.
Many residents feel anxious. Business owners express fears of losing customers if safety concerns aren’t quickly addressed. Tourists, a major part of St. Maarten’s economy, also feel less secure. This increase in crime threatens the island’s reputation as a safe, inviting destination.
The police department is working closely with the government to address the issue. Together, they are exploring additional measures, including advanced surveillance and community awareness campaigns. While these steps are encouraging, residents want faster results.
Robbery remains a serious concern in St. Maarten. The community hopes swift action and stronger prevention methods will soon bring a sense of security back to the island.

Urvin ‘Nuto’ Wawoe Arrested in Dominican Republic
Curaçaoan criminal Urvin “Nuto” Wawoe, prime suspect in several serious crimes, appeared yesterday via video link before the court of first instance in Curaçao. Wawoe is being held in the Netherlands in the high-security prison in Vught. The hearing took place under heightened security, with a large number of members of the arrest team present in the courtroom in Curaçao, although Wawoe himself was in the Netherlands.
The case against Wawoe, who is also known as one of the leaders of the notorious criminal organization No Limit Soldiers (NLS), includes fourteen charges. These range from murder and attempted murder to drug trafficking and money laundering. The Public Prosecution Service states that between January 2014 and February 2021, Wawoe led a criminal organization that was involved in liquidations and attacks. Together with other members of the No Limit Soldiers, he is said to have ordered several murders, including the infamous shooting at Hato airport.
In the Ceto case, Wawoe is accused of complicity in the murder of Erwin Juliana, alias ‘Junni Djais’, who was shot dead at Curaçao airport on July 15, 2014. According to the indictment, Wawoe allegedly ordered Judrin M. and Adrian M. to commit this murder, using automatic firearms.
In addition, Wawoe is accused of having ordered the murder of Shentley Arnhem, alias ‘Champi’ who was killed at the same time and in the same violent manner. Seven bystanders were also injured in this shooting.
In the Triton case, Wawoe is held responsible for the murder of Kevin Metura on Sint Maarten on February 7, 2016. The Public Prosecution Service states that Wawoe had this murder carried out in revenge, because Metura was allegedly involved in the murder of Latoya Flanders, an acquaintance of Wawoe.
Wawoe is said to have communicated to co-suspect Tyson Quant via secure messages that Metura had to be killed.

Another charge concerns the attempted murder of Kimoy Gumbs on Sint Maarten on April 8, 2016. According to the accusation, Wawoe, together with others, ordered the liquidation of Gumbs because of his alleged involvement in the murder of Flanders. However, this attempt proved unsuccessful.
In the Ares case, Wawoe is accused of ordering the murder of Omar Jones on Sint Maarten on August 31, 2016. Jones is also said to have been involved in the death of Flanders. In this case too, Wawoe is said to have paid an undisclosed amount of money to those who carried out the murder.
The Hebe charge revolves around a double murder attempt on brothers Marini and Thaddeus Nunes in November 2016 on Sint Maarten. Wawoe allegedly offered suspect K. Fortune, alias “Cuchi”, money and possibly drugs to kill the brothers, who were also suspected of involvement in the murder of Flanders.

Finally, Wawoe is accused of the murder of “Nino Brown” and the attempted murder of Estevan Severe on March 14, 2017 in Sint Maarten, again in connection with the murder of Flanders. Both victims were allegedly targeted because of information they had about the crimes of Wawoe’s organization, according to the indictment.
Wawoe’s lawyers, Mr. Muuren in the Netherlands and Mr. Alicia Blonk in Curacao, have requested the court to suspend his detention. But the Public Prosecution Service states that there is sufficient reason to keep the suspect in custody, given the seriousness of the many accusations against him.
Wawoe has now been in detention for nineteen months and will remain in custody after this hearing. A new pro forma hearing is scheduled for February 17, in which the court will evaluate the progress of the investigation and the findings of the lawyers.
The court expects the case to be fully heard from early June 2025. The trial is expected to take several days to give the defense enough time for their pleas. During the hearing, Wawoe again stated that he had nothing to do with the alleged murder orders.
